Hand-Carved Westminster Hall Angel Sculpture (52cm)
Please note, this item is available for pre-order only, with an estimated dispatch date of 15 September 2022.
Carved by hand from the finest English Oak by Devon-based woodcarver William Barsley, this exquisite sculpture is a unique scale replica of one of the 26 angels that decorate the medieval hammerbeam roof of Westminster Hall – the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster.
More than 600-years old, the original angels of Westminster Hall have borne witness to some of the most defining moments in British history, including the trials of Charles I and Guy Fawkes, as well as the lying in state of Winston Churchill.
To accurately reproduce the angel in wood, the artist has used the same tools and materials as the medieval woodcarvers would have done during construction in the late 14th-century, and is able to draw upon his own experience restoring the original angels during the Westminster Hall restoration project that began in 2018.
Made by William in his studio in Devon, each hand-carved angel tells not only the fascinating history of Westminster Hall, but of the artist's own place within that six-hundred-year history.
The angels are made to order in three sizes. The medium sized angel enables the sculptor to capture a much higher level of detail in the iconic features such as the lions, fleur-de-lis and face.
