Westminster Hall is the oldest building in Parliament and also the only part of the ancient Palace which survives in almost its original form. The magnificent hammerbeam roof, the largest medieval timber roof in Northern Europe, was commissioned in 1393 by Richard II and the beams support angels holding shields bearing his Coat of Arms.
